Our Traditional houses

Aris & Maria houses are situated in the historical Kastro, photographed a thousand times over, on the east side of Sifnos.

They comprise of 5 independent houses built about a century ago. Their renovation started in 1984 and although it is completed, they are updated every year, improving the amenities and ensuring a high standard of accommodation.

All of them are situated inside the traditional settlement on cobblestone lanes, and they are brilliant examples of the Kastro’s architecture. They have authentic floors from local slate, ceiling beams, typical low front doors and asymmetrical walls. Each house has its own, distinct character.

Kastro

Kastro is located at the easternmost part of Sifnos, built on a hill overlooking the sea.

Up until the 19th century it was the capital of the island and its defence role is reflected in its unique architecture. It is a settlement with a 4000 year history, the remnants of which can be seen throughout its area.

The rocky coast is especially popular to those who prefer large flat boulders when they go swimming. Seralia, a small pebble beach 200m from the settlement, will satisfy the rest of the swimmers.

Distances

Kastro is located 8Km east of Kamares, the port of Sifnos.

The southern beaches of the island (Platis Gialos, Chrisopigi, Fassolou, Faros, Glifo) are 7-13Km from the Kastro and there is regular bus connection. Today’s capital, Apollonia, is a mere 3Km from the settlement.

50 metres from the "Aris & Maria houses" you will find restaurants, cafés and the bus stop.

The houses

The "Aris & Maria houses" is a complex consisting of 6 houses scattered inside the traditional settlement of the Kastro of Sifnos. Your stay in one of them is certainly a unique experience as it combines modern comforts with accommodation at an authentic place untouched by time.

Each house of the "Aris & Maria houses" is a special, renovated house in which all the architectural features that give the Kastro houses their unique character have been preserved. Slate floors, cedar ceiling beams, doors with a horizontal separation that allows them to be used also as windows.
